Kalari Transport: Adding work instructions online to ensure Risk Assessments are understood
Kalari is a road transportation specialist with more than 25 years experience working with some of the country’s largest corporations.
Peter Symonds, Senior Driver Trainer at Kalari Transport was part of the change management from a face-to-face induction process to Rapid Induct in February 2008.
"Our previous induction process was a PowerPoint face-to-face method which included a paper based questionnaire. Most of the Trainers conducted the inductions, including myself", said Peter. "This process had the potential to wrought the system as people could give out the answers. The administration process then required us to mark the assessments, enter them into a database and file away the paperwork".
"When we looked at other options for online inductions, we did research video inductions, however the costs were too high and a video cannot be updated and edited when required. Rapid Induct was discovered from a referral from one of our clients and we have been using it now successfully for the last 2 years", says Peter.
"Our employees and sub-contractors complete the induction on site as part of their overall induction training and some complete it before they arrive. The benefits of the system are that it is easy to use as all we need to do is send a password and we know when it is completed through the reporting component of the system. Once we have issued a password we can then follow up with the person to ensure that it is done", says Peter.
"Rapid Induct has improved our quality of inductions, improved safety awareness, improved safety audit processes and reduced trainer and administration time. Last month we upgraded to Rapid Induct Premium from the Standard system and have found it even easier to use and has provided more flexibility as we can copy and create modules. It is also easier to upload video and audio files. We will be creating a course by adding work instructions online on how to complete a risk assessment so that we have a record of all the contractors and employees completing this module. This is just another way of ensuring that all personnel have been provided with sufficient training on how to complete a risk assessment", says Peter.
